[Chronic Kidney Disease ]

Introduction :-

Chronic kidney disease is gradual loss in kidney function over a period of months or years. It is also called Chronic Kidney Failure . Further damage to kidney results in dialysis or kidney transplant. With advanced kidney failure, the levels of waste and fluid rapidly increase in the body. Hence, the treatment is needed to stop or slow down the progression of the disease.
In the early stages of chronic kidney disease, you may have symptoms like nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, weakness, disturbed sleep, swollen feet and ankles, hypertension etc.

Causes :-
  • Diabetes
  • Hypertension
  • Glomerulonephriitis (inflammation of Kidney filtering units)
  • Poly-cystic Kidney disease (multiple cysts in the kidney)
  • Obstructions in the urine flow caused by problems like kidney stones, tumors or an enlarged prostate gland in men.
  • Repeated urinary infections or polynephritis.
  • Overuse of some medicines like NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), such as aspirin or ibuprofen and steroids.

Symptoms :-

Patient may notice one or more of the following symptoms if his kidneys are beginning to fail:
  • Itching
  • Muscle cramps
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Not feeling hungry
  • Swelling in your feet and ankles
  • Too much urine (pee) or not enough urine
  • Trouble catching your breath
  • Trouble sleeping

If his kidneys stop working suddenly (acute kidney failure), you may notice one or more of the following symptoms :-
  • Abdominal (belly) pain
  • Back pain
  • Diarrhea
  • Fever
  • Nosebleeds
  • Rash
  • Vomiting

Ayurvedic Perspective :-

In Ayurveda, Kidney disease is known as “ Vrikka Roga”. Vitiation of “Vata” dosha is responsible for the impairment of Kidney functions. Whereas “Kapha”dosh is responsible for blockages of minor body channels, known as “Srotas”
According to Ayurveda, all kidney diseases comes under mutravahasrotas vikar. Whenever we eat food it is digested and is divided into two parts. They are Sara Bhag (essential/nutritive component of food) and Kitta Bhag (Waste part which forms stool, urine and sweat). Sara bhaga forms the rasa, which meets up the body’s nutritive requirements by converting into other dhatus. Vyana Vata helps in formation of urine and Apana vata is responsible for elimination of urine. So whenever we plan treatment of Chronic failure we have to take care of both these Vayu. The Ama (toxins) which is formed because of weak digestive fire accumulated in the srotas leads to obstruction and is sometimes also responsible for one of the causes of Chronic Kidney Disease.

Complications :-

Kidneys help whole body work properly. When patient have CKD, he can also have problems with how the rest of his body is working. Some of the common complications of CKD include anemia, bone disease, heart disease, high potassium, high calcium and fluid buildup.
  • Gout
  • Anemia
  • Metabolic acidosis
  • Secondary hyperparathyroidism
  • Bone disease and high phosphorus (hyperphosphatemia)
  • Heart disease
  • High potassium (hyperkalemia)
  • Fluid buildup

Stages of Chronic Kidney Disease ( C K D ) :-

Chronic Kidney disease ( C K D )  is divided into five stages. The stages are based on the eGFR test result and how well your kidneys work to filter waste and extra fluid out of your blood. As the stages go up, kidney disease gets worse and your kidneys do not work as well. At each stage, it is important to take steps to slow down the damage to your kidneys.
  • Stage 1 CKD: eGFR 90 or Greater
  • Stage 2 CKD: eGFR Between 60 and 89
  • Stage 3 CKD: eGFR Between 30 and 59
  • Stage 4 CKD: eGFR Between 15 and 29
  • Stage 5 CKD: eGFR Less than 15

Ayurveda offers treatment for all stages of different renal problems. At the core of Ayurvedas success in treating renal problems, or any other ailment for that matter, is customization. In addition to customized medication, Ayurvedic treatment also offers personalized lifestyle and diet recommendations which has a holistic effect on the body. A significant specialty of Ayurveda is the application of Panchakarma therapy. Depending on the condition of the patient, one or more of 40 different therapies is applied to remove toxins accumulated due to a faulty kidney. Panchakarma therapy also stimulate the bodys natural repairing mechanism and rejuvenates renal tissues and cells.

According to the data from the Indian Renal Foundation, the cost of kidney failure is extremely high in India. Haemodialysis with 12 sessions every month costs around Rs 12,000 to Rs 15,000. Peritoneal dialysis costs around Rs 18,000 to Rs 20,000 every month. Kidney transplants can cost Rs 4 lakhs to Rs 6 lakh, depending on the hospital.
