Oligospermia
[ Oligozoospermia ]
[ Low Sperm Count ]

Introduction :-

Oligospermia is a male fertility issue characterized by a low sperm count. Sperm count in ejaculate can vary throughout life. A healthy sperm count is often necessary for fertility.
As pre World Health Organization ( WHO ) a normal semen sample contains 40 million to 300 million sperm per millilitre and a low sperm count is considered anything between 10 to 20 millilitres.

Types of Oligospermia

Oligospermia is of three types :-
  • Mild oligospermia is 10 to 15 million sperm/mL.
  • Moderate oligospermia is considered 5 to 10 million sperm/mL.
  • Severe oligospermia is diagnosed when sperm counts fall between 0 and 5 million sperm/mL.

Causes :-
  • Infection that interferes sperm production.
  • Retrograde ejaculation ( ejaculation backward into the bladder
  • Hormonal imbalance ( Low testosterone & High Prolactin hormone level )
  • Undescended Testicles
  • Over use of Anabolic Steroid
  • Heat exposure ( Saunas, hot tub bath )
  • Certain medication ( Finasteride, Antiandrogens, Alpha blockers )
  • Variococles – Vein swelling that drains Testicles.
  • Medical conditions like Thyroid disorder  Diabetes and Multiple Sclerosis, obesity.
  • Recreational drugs ( Alcohol, cocaine, marijuana)
  • Genetic disorder ( Altered chromosome, Y chromosome deletion )
  • Stress
  • Excess Smoking

Symptoms :-
  • Sexual functioning issues like the inability to maintain an erection ( Erectile dysfunction ) or other ejaculatory issues.
  • Pain, discomfort, a lump or swelling in the testicle area
  • Enlarged and swollen veins in the scrotum
  • Decrese in Facial and body hair ( hormonal imbalance sign )
  • If this problem happens due to transmission of a virus, then one can experience some burning sensation while urinating.
  • Thick discharge
Ayurvedic Perspective :-

Oligospermia can be correlated with Shukra kshaya in Ayurveda. This condition causes “Napunsakta” in men. Shukra kshaya is caused due to vitiation of Pitta dosha, which leads to deterioration of Shukra dhatu. This vitiation of Pitta dosha causes imbalance in other doshas and starts showing like “Erectile Dysfunction”(Accumulation of Vata dosha ), “Loss of Libido” ( accumulation of Vata and Kapha dosha ) and so on.
In Ayurveda, healthy semen which is more fertile is described as
“shukram shuklam guru snigdham madhuram bahalam bahu |
ghritamaakshikatailabham sadgarbhaya ||”
This means the semen which is white, heavy, sticky, sweet in taste, more in quantity and which may look like the colour of ghee or honey or oil is always fertile.
Ayurveda has advocated a separate branch which deals with the management of defective semen and spermatogenesis along with sexual potencification, is called as Vajikarana tantra (Aphrodisiac medicine). Vajikarana Therapy is recommended in Ayurveda for men who are above 16 and below 70 to maintain optimum sexual activity and healthy semen. Further, the treatment is also accompanied with intake of oral Ayurvedic Medicines and Herbal Medicines.
