Introduction :-

Uterine fibroids (also called myomas, Leiomyomas or Fibromas ),are growths made up of the muscle and connective tissue from the wall of the uterus. These growths are usually not cancerous (benign).
                                     Fibroids can grow as a single nodule (one growth) or in a cluster. Fibroid clusters size can range from 1 mm to more than 20 cm in diameter or even larger. These growths can develop within the wall of the uterus, inside the main cavity of the organ or even on the outer surface. Fibroids can vary in size, number and location within and on Uterus. Approximately 40 to 80% of women have fibroids.

Types of Uterine Fibroid 
  • Subserosal Fibroid -These are present on outer wall/layer of Uterus ( 55%)
  • Intramural Fibroid – These ate present on muscular layer of Uterus (40%)
  • Submucosal Fibroid -These are present on innermost layer which protrude into Uterine cavity ( 5% )



Causes :-
  • Hormones ( affected by oestrogen and progesterone level )
  • Genetic changes
  • Other growth factors
  • Extra Cellular Matrix ( ECM )
  • Family history
  • Constipation
  • Pregnancy
  • Overweight
  • Low physical exercise
  • Unresolved concern about abortion

  • Low Thyroid Level
 
Symptoms :-
  • Heavy menstrual bleeding
  • Swelling or enlargement of the abdomen
  • Menstrual periods lasting more than a week
  • Feeling of fullness in the Pelvic area.
  • Frequent urination.
  • Dyspareunia ( Noncyclic Pelvic Pain )
  • Difficulty emptying the bladder
  • Cramps during menstrual periods
  • Constipation
  • Backache or leg pains
  • Lower back pain
  • Pain during intercourse
  • Reproductive problem such as infertility
  • Complications during pregnancy and labour, Miscarriage
 
Ayurvedic Perspective :-

In Ayurveda Fibroids can be correlated with “Granthi” or “Arbuda”. These are formed due to the accumulation of Kapha dost along with the vitiation of Vata and Pitta dosha.
