Irritable Bowel Syndrome
(IBS) [ Grahani] :-

Introduction  :-

Irritable bowel syndrome ( IBS) is a common functional Gastro- intestinal disorder characterized by recurrent chronic abdominal discomfort and associated with altered episodes of diarrhoea and constipation in association with abdominal pain,bloating and Flatulance .According to modern science its cause is unknown.
                                               It is also called by many names like Colitis, Mucous Colitis, Spastic Colon or Spastic bowel in Gastrointestinal disorder.                                
                                        It is a chronic condition that patient will need to manage for long term. Many patients can control the symptoms by managing Lifestyle and diet habits, while others need proper medications.

Types of IBS :-

   Mainly 3 types of IBS are there :-
  • IBS with Constipation  [ IBS – C ]
  • IBS with Diarrhoea [ IBS – D ]
  • IBS with Mixed symptoms ( both Diarrhoea & Constipation)[ IBS–M]


Cause :-
  • Suppression of natural urges.
  • Overeating
  • Irregular eating habit
  • Excessive Stress
  • Anxiety
  • Eating incompatible food ( Viruddh Ahaar )

Symptoms :-
  • Pain in lower abdominal region.
  • Bloating
  • An urge to empty the bowel after meal.
  • Flatulance
  • Mucous in Stool.
  • Alternate bouts of Constipation and Diarrhoea.
  • Abdominal pain followed by the emptying of the bowel.
  • A felling of incomplete evacuation of bowels.
  • Abdominal distension

Ayurvedic Perspective  :-

In Ayurveda irritable Bowel Syndrome ( IBS ) is known as “Grahani” which is disturbed function of the bowels and Intestine due to the imbalance of any of the three Doshas ( Vata, Pitta and Kapha ).
              According to bowel habits  “Grahani” ( IBS ) is of 4 types.
  • Vataja Grahani ( Constipation Predominant )
  • Pittaja Grahani ( Diarrhoea Predomominant )
  • Kaphaj Grahani ( Dysentry Predominant )
  • Tridoshaj Grahani (  Combination of all above symptoms )
 
Complications :-

If left untreated IBS may lead to serious complications like :-

  • Iron defeciency anaemia
  • Diarrhoea
  • Constipation

  • Poor quality of life.
  • Difficulty in swallowing.
