Acid Reflux ( GERD )

 Introduction :-

Gastro esophageal reflux disease ( GERD ) is a chronic conditionin which gastric contents that include solid and liquid food together as a mixture make upward movement into esophagus by opening lower esophageal sphincter ( LES ). This repeated reflux damages lower esophageal sphincter which cause heart burn and many other symptoms.




 Cause :-
  • Damaged LES ( Lower Esophageal  sphincter  and UES ( Upper Esophageal Sphincter )
  • Obesity
  • Pregnancy
  • Acidity

Ayurvedic Perspective :-

Acid Reflux is caused by aggravation of Pitta dosha. Pitta is one of the important humor that symbolise “Agni” ( Fire ) and it leads to increase of acidic content in stomach fluids.

  • Consume cool foods like Rice, Cucurbitaceous fruit.
  • Consume chilled milk to neutralise stomach acid.
  • Maintain gap in between Meals.
  • Consume Lemonades and Coconut water to balance electrolytes.
  • Keep sitting for 30 minutes after each meal to ensure optimum blood circulation in digestive tract.
  • Consume Pomegranate.
  • Consume Mint leaves.
  • Intake water 30 minutes before having meal to wash excess acid from stomach.
  • Consume Oatmeal.
  • Consume Coriander leaves.
  • Consume adeqate amount of water after 45 minutes of having meal.
  • Chew food properly.

       DON'T [ Apathya ]

  • Don’t drink hot beverages after meal.
  • Don’t overeat.
  • Don’t lie down immediately after eating food as it may lead weakness of LES ( Lower Esophageal Sphincter ).
  • Don’t drink water just after eating.
  • Don’t eat oily, spicy and hot meal since it  imbalances gastric juices secretion.
  • Don’t ignore Acid reflux episodes.
  • Don’t drink carbonated beverages like Soda and beer since it aggregate stomach acid.
  • Don’t eat red meat, citrus fruit, caffeinated drinks.
